The Bitter Truth Jerry Thomas’ Own Decanter Bitters is based on a recipe by Professor Jerry Thomas (1830-1885), who is considered the most important bartender of the 19th-century. Although we are not sure if he would know what cider candies smell like since we don’t know if they existed in the 1860s. The original cocktail showman, Jeremiah P. Thomas was the godfather of flair bartending, the spiritual ancestor of Tom Cruise in Cocktail, the author of the world's first surviving cocktail book, and a New York icon, too. Thomas was a genius for publicity. Flag as Inappropriate. In 1862, Jerry Thomas published a recipe book for drinks that is arguably the most famous and widely read bartender’s cocktail book ever written. Known most often as “Jerry Thomas’ Bartender’s Guide: or How to Mix Drinks” it was the first drink recipe book published in the United States.

I have a better-quality version of the image attached to the article, if anyone would like it. It appears on p. 77 of 'How To Mix Drinks', but I'm not at all sure it depicts Thomas himself or if it's just an illustration of the Blue Blazer.64.131.230.21 (talk)
- There's also a better scan at the Google Books page. Someone should add it. Rees11 (talk) 00:14, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
